The Lac la Biche Rotary Club joined the Athabasca Rotary Club, and travelled to Belize as part of Athabasca's Adopt a School Ancillary Project. The group included 15 from Athabasca, Sue Ward, president and Ruth Fedorow, president elect , for Lac La Biche . The two groups did hands on work at the Faith Nazerene School, in the Cayo district, in Belize, replaced windows, ceiling fans, evestroughing, did landscaping and planted shrubs and trees. The classroom has been unusable for 5 years, and may now be a classroom or a library. Most schools in Belize are very undersupported, and very poor. The children were overwhelmed when they asked Ruth and her sister, Eileen, how much they were being paid to scrub desks and scrape gum off the undersides of same desks, and she answered, ' we do not get paid, we are doing this because we love you. Sue and Ruth , with the leader, Jackie Hobal, inspected several schools, looking for an Ancillary project for LLB, where they would partner with Rotary clubs in Belize. All teachers and students are very grateful for the help they receive, hugs and more hugs, and tearful goodbyes, and promises to return and we felt priveliged, and happy when we left. We did get in kick back time, did some snorkeling, exploring , enjoyed the sun and wonderful hospitality. For info on these projects, go to belizeliteracy.com.
