Computer Parts Needed for Belize- discussion Summary

As discussed at the Rotary meeting on Thursday June 28, 2012, below is the email with details on our needs.

SUMMARY OF HOW WE GOT HERE
Just so we are all on the same page: you mentioned your need to ship out refurbished computers and that your usual channels were already filled.  Based on that, I mentioned to the Belize Literacy Program folks – as it turns out the program does not need the refurbished computers; however, what the program would benefit most from would be parts (indicated in the email below).

WHY WE WOULD PREFER PARTS
The rationale behind the request for parts vs computers are:
1)       The environment (heat/dust) in Belize is not conducive to PCs
2)      The cooling cost to run PCs in Belize is expensive so the program prefers notebooks
3)      The cost of shipping PCs is expensive – parts are a bit easier because more can be shipped with the same funds

Given that your group has already put in hours to refurbish the computers, I am not sure what your thoughts are on dismantling them for parts.  Perhaps you have some of these parts still in the “to be refurbished” pile.

SHIPMENT SCHEDULE
the program has a container going down in August/September or thereabouts and if we can make the necessary arrangements, it would be great to get this shipment on that container.

NEXT STEP
Please think this request over and we can discuss options.  We can probably get Rotaract and Interact and the True North Club organized for weekend or two to help sort this out.
